Lionfish

Lionfish
Two good sized lionfish from today

As with much of the Caribbean, the reefs are infested with lionfish. This fish is invasive, has no natural predators, eats tons of small reef fish, and thrives in the warm waters here. They are really bad for the ecosystem.

We enjoy doing our part to help the reefs here by killing and eating them. You have to be careful when processing them (the spines in their fins are venomous), but they taste sooooo good.

I shot 4, but 2 got away. Hopefully I got the other 2 well enough that they die and get eaten by little fish. The number of lionfish that should be here is zero - and there is a concerted effort by many governments to eradicate them through responsible hunting. Grenada is one of the countries where you can hunt them any time of year, and in any location using any gear you want, including scuba and spear guns. Today we were snorkeling and used pole spears.

I think we are going to make these into ceviche using a recipe from good friends of ours. Then later in the week we will go back out and look for more!
